The documents below provide details of how, and on what, almost £48 billion of NHS expenditure was used in the 2008-09 financial year.

As in previous years, the main purpose is to provide a basis for comparison within (and outside) the NHS between organisations, and down to the level of individual treatments

For the 2008-09 publication, the organisation level data that underpins the national averages is being published alongside the National Schedules and Reference Cost Index (RCI) on our website. To reduce file sizes these are in csv format, a guidance sheet demonstrating how to upload these files into Microsoft Access is also supplied. This method of publication replaces the dvd issued in previous years.
