Design for growth

I’m delighted to say that one of the top items on my agenda this week is the ‘Design for Growth’ summit on Thursday. This is an event which BIS and the Design Council have pulled out all the stops to bring together one of the best line-ups we have seen.

Among the guests attending will be Apple’s Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, Jonathan Ive. He’ll be joined by Gerry McGovern and Ian Callum, the Design Directors at Land Rover and Jaguar respectively, among others. My colleague and Minister for Business and Enterprise, Mark Prisk will also be there to join in the debates.

This is an exciting opportunity for the Government to engage with industry and designers to discuss how design can contribute to innovation and growth. There will be a mixture of presentations, interviews and debates where we expect the audience will really engage with the discussions.

So why have we organised this summit? Well, the UK has a global reputation as a leader in creativity and design and this thriving sector makes a significant contribution to the economy. It’s therefore vital that we continue to raise awareness of the importance of design across the business and public sectors so that the potential of design to drive innovation and generate sustainable growth is realised.

The summit will be webcast, meaning that you’ll have the opportunity to get involved and send through your ideas and questions online during the event. I’m looking forward to the day and hope that many of you will be able to join us either there or through the webcast.

‘Design for Growth’ takes place on Thursday June 23. For more information and to register for the live webcast visit 2011 Design Summit Follow the Design Council and BIS on Twitter for regular updates #designsummit11
