Clinical safety training

The Clinical safety training courses are designed to support the NHS and its suppliers with training in the principles of safety, human factors, risk assessment and risk mitigation, all within the context of health IT by implementing Information Standards Board for Health and Social Care ISB 0129 (Data Set Change Notice (DSCN) 14/2009) and ISB 0160 (DSCN 18/2009), which are available on the website ISBs provide assurance that Health IT products are as safe as can be expected within the context of their use.

To comply with the ISBs, suppliers of health IT products which have clinical or patient safety implications to the NHS are required to supply a safety case for the products, based on an appropriate hazard assessment, and have this signed off by a suitably trained and qualified clinician from their organisation. The clinical safety training provides accreditation of clinicians who are then empowered as "suitably trained and experienced clinicians" to sign off and approve safety documentation.

Who should attend?

The courses are designed for all clinical or non-clinical staff, who need to gain a basic understanding of the Clinical Safety Management System (CSMS) activities during the design and/or implementation of a healthcare IT solution to support the implementation of ISBs 0129 and 0160. This includes clinicians, managers, developers and testers.

All clinicians wishing to become a recognised "Accredited Clinician" for their organisation need to attend these courses whilst ensuring they are a suitably qualified and experienced clinician, who is currently registered with an appropriate professional body for example GMC, NMC etc.

For a clinician to retain their accreditation status with the Department of Health Informatics Directorate (DHID) they need to have attended at least one training course within the previous 2 years. DHID recommend that clinicians attend yearly refresher courses to keep up to date on current developments. If refresher training is not undertaken then the Trust may not be compliant with ISB 0129 and 0160.

Style of learning

The courses consist of a mixture of interactive presentations and workshops, with the emphasis being on the workshops and learning through experience.
