Independent living and equipment contacts

There are a number of organisations and charities that offer advice and information to disabled people about assistive equipment and independent living.

Accessible Property Register

The Accessible Property Register website lists accessible property for sale and for rent across the UK.

Assist UK

Assist UK is a national network, with over 50 local Disabled Living Centres giving impartial advice on independent living equipment.

Care & Repair Cymru

Care & Repair Cymru is the Welsh national body that works to ensure that all older or disabled people have homes that are safe, secure and appropriate to their needs.

Care & Repair England

Care & Repair England is a charity set up to improve the housing and living conditions of older or disabled people in England and so enable them to live independently in their own homes for as long as they wish.

Care & Repair Forum Scotland

The Care & Repair Forum Scotland is the Scottish national co-ordinating body, offering assistance to disabled or older people to improve or adapt their homes according to their needs.

DEMAND

DEMAND offers free design and manufacture of bespoke equipment for disabled people who cannot use any off-the-shelf product.

Dial UK

Dial UK has a disability information and advice line on subjects like community care, equipment, independent living, holidays and discrimination.

Disabled Living Foundation

The Disabled Living Foundation provides information on disability equipment, day-to-day household gadgets, new technologies and training techniques.

Dogs for the Disabled

Dogs for the Disabled is a charity that trains and partners assistance dogs to help disabled people live a more independent life.

Foundations

Foundations is the national co-ordinating body for Home Improvement Agencies in England.

Going For Independence

Going For Independence is a not-for-profit company providing a home assessment and information service for equipment and adaptations.

Independent Living Fund

The Independent Living Fund was set up as a national resource dedicated to the financial support of disabled people to enable them to choose to live in the community rather than in residential care.

Leonard Cheshire Disability

Leonard Cheshire Disability helps disabled people to live independently by providing a wide range of services, and campaigns to change negative attitudes to disability.

Local Government Ombudsman

The Local Government Ombudsman investigates complaints about local councils and some other authorities and organisations including care homes and home care providers.
 

Motability

Motability is the charity that oversees the Motability Scheme, which enables disabled people to have a car, powered wheelchair or scooter, through contract hire or hire purchase.

National Centre for Independent Living

The National Centre for Independent Living is run and controlled by disabled people with the primary aim to promote independent living.

Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children

Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children is a charity which provides practical support for disabled children throughout the UK.

Queen Elizabeth's Foundation Vocational Services

The Queen Elizabeth's Foundation operates five centres specialising in vocational training, brain injury rehabilitation and development of life skills for people with complex disabilities.
