This publication presents statistics on road goods vehicles travelling to mainland Europe from Great Britain, by country of registration. It includes all the main ferry routes between Great Britain and mainland Europe, and the Channel Tunnel, but excludes routes between Great Britain and Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.

Key points

Year ending Q1 2011

  • 2.51 million goods vehicles travelled from Great Britain to mainland Europe in the year ending Q1 2011, five per cent higher than the year ending Q1 2010 and 52 per cent higher than in 1996, but 14 per cent lower than the peak in 2007.
  • 1.82 million of these goods vehicles were powered vehicles, and 682 thousand were unaccompanied trailers, up three per cent and seven per cent respectively on the year ending Q1 2010.

Latest quarter

  • 636,000 goods vehicles travelled from Great Britain to mainland Europe during Q1 2011, up six per cent on Q1 2010
  • 464,000 of these goods vehicles were powered vehicles and 172,000 were unaccompanied trailers, up seven per cent and five per cent respectively on Q1 2010.
