This publication presents provisional summary statistics on freight handled by major UK ports, updated quarterly. Provisional annual statistics are updated in June and detailed final annual statistics are published in September. See Related statistical releases below.

Key points
Year ending Q1 2011
- Total port traffic (tonnage) for the year ending Q1 2011 was three per cent up on the year ending Q1 2010.
- The number of units handled for the year ending Q1 2011 was up two per cent on the year ending Q1 2010.
Latest quarter
- Tonnage in Q1 of 2011 was up by two per cent compared with the same quarter in the previous year. Inward traffic rose by seven and outward fell by four per cent, compared with Q1 2010.
- The number of units of all types handled remained unchanged compared with the same quarter in 2010. Inward traffic fell, by two per cent and outward traffic rose by one per cent, compared to Q1 2010
