Congestion on local authority managed ‘A’ roads: January to March 2012 - Statistics

Summary

This statistical release presents provisional information about congestion on local authority managed ‘A’ roads between January and March 2012.

Provisional data for 2012 shows that average speeds during the weekday morning peak period on locally managed ‘A’ roads in England were faster in January (2.5 per cent), broadly the same in February (less than 0.1 per cent) and showed a slight decrease in March (0.2 per cent) than in 2011.
The recent increase in January 2012 will be heavily influenced by the improved weather conditions observed during this month, compared with 2011.
The average ‘weekday morning peak’ speed had been showing an upward trend since January 2011 (with the exception of May 2011 – during the royal wedding period, when there was a high demand for the road network). However this changed direction in March 2012 showing a slight downward turn.
