Firefighter pensions

Regular firefighters employed before 6 April 2006 were eligible for membership of the Firefighters' Pension Scheme (FPS). The scheme is now closed.

A New Firefighters' Pension Scheme (NFPS) was introduced for regular and retained firefighters employed since 6 April 2006.

Responsibility for policy on the pension schemes rests with the Department for Communities and Local Government, working with the administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The administration and payment of individual pensions and benefits is the responsibility of fire and rescue authorities.

This section provides users with up-to-date information and guidance on both the Firefighters' Pension Scheme and New Firefighters' Pension Scheme.
