Neighbourhood Community Budgets

Background

Too often residents' experience of local public services is one of frustration at the bureaucracy involved in getting things done.

Giving residents a chance to say what services they want, how they should work and whether they want to run them - by getting them involved in the design of Neighbourhood Community Budgets - can help to give people greater control over their local public services.

Successful Neighbourhood Community Budgets will deliver a better service to residents because they:

  • make better use of resources, including pooling agency budgets where it is effective to do so, as well as local knowledge, community assets and voluntary effort
  • unblock central barriers so local professionals can deliver better services by redesigning them so delivery is more effective for residents

What we are doing

Twelve pilot areas

The Community Budget prospectus was published in autumn 2011 and invited bids to work with DCLG to establish Neighbourhood Community Budgets. In total 45 bids were received from across the country with the final 12 pilot neighbourhoods announced on 21 December 2011.

The 12 pilot neighbourhood areas are:

  • Little Horton (Bradford)
  • White City (Hammersmith and Fulham)
  • Shard End, Castle Vale, and Balsall Heath (Birmingham)
  • Haverhill Town Council
  • Ilfracombe Town Council
  • Norbiton (Kingston-upon-Thames)
  • Cowgate, Kenton Bar, Montague (Newcastle)
  • Sherwood (Tunbridge Wells)
  • Queens Park (Westminster)
  • Poplar Harca (Tower Hamlets)

DCLG is supporting the 12 pilot neighbourhoods to develop plans for Neighbourhood Community Budgets by March 2013.

The pilots vary greatly in population size and in their composition, from parish councils to local authorities to community groups.
