Summary

The Indices of Deprivation 2004 and 2007 were created to provide the best possible measure of multiple deprivation at a single point in time. The Indices therefore do not facilitate backwards comparison nor do they enable users to understand how the pattern of deprivation is changing between these fixed points.

In order to address and in part overcome these problems, an Economic Deprivation Index (EDI) has been constructed in a consistent manner at Lower Super Output Area level for each year between 1999 and 2005.

The Tracking Neighbourhoods Report provides an indication of the type of analyses that can be undertaken using the EDI.
