The Department today published the latest statistical information relating to A&E activity for the week ending 02 September 2012. This information is gathered from providers within NHS Trusts, NHS Foundation Trusts, Primary Care Trusts and Independent Sector Organisations.

The data includes:

total number of attendances in the week for all A & E types, including Minor Injury Units and Walk-in Centres, and of these, the number discharged, admitted or transferred within four hours of arrival
number of admissions via A&E, and any waits over four hours and over 12 hours for admission following a decision to admit

VTE Risk Assessment data collection: April to June 2012

The eighth set of quarterly statistics on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Assessment in England, produced by the Department of Health were released on 7^th September according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of VTE Risk Assessments carried out on adult admissions to NHS funded acute care are as follows:

Of the 3.3m adult patients admitted to NHS funded acute care between January and March 2012, as reported in this data collection, 93.4% of these received a VTE risk assessment on admission, a slight increase compared to Q4 2011-12 (92.5%).
In Q1 2012-13, the proportion of admissions receiving a VTE risk assessment was slightly lower for NHS acute providers (93%) than Independent Sector providers (96%), although NHS acute providers carried out around 98% of all VTE risk assessments.
At SHA level, performance varied from 91.5% in South Central to 96.6% in East of England during Quarter 1. All the SHAs achieved the 90% compliance for Q1.

In June 2012, 275 providers (out of 309 providers who submitted data) reported that at least 90% of adult admissions were risk assessed for VTE, compared to 241 in March 2012, 221 in December 2011, and 18 in July 2010.

NHS inpatient elective admission events and outpatient referrals and attendances, quarter ending June 2012

The latest quarterly national statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events produced by the Department of Health were released on 31^st August 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 30th June 2012 include data for England, Strategic Health Authorities, and NHS Trusts and PCTs.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

The number of decisions to admit has increased by 42,000 (3.1%) remaining at 1.4 million and the number of elective admissions from the list has increased by 36,000 (3.0%) to 1.3 million compared to Q1 2011/12.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

In Quarter 1 of 2012/13:

The number of GP referrals made has increased by 63,000 (2.2%) remaining at 2.9 million and the number of other referrals made has increased by 112,000 (6.4%) to 1.9 million compared to Q1 2011/12.

First attendances at consultant outpatient clinics have increased by 68,000 (1.7%) to 4.2 million and total attendances increased by 330,000 (2.6%) to 13.2 million compared to Q1 2011/12.

Did not attend (DNA) rates have decreased this quarter compared to the equivalent quarter of 2011/12. This quarter, the percentage of patients who did not attend for their first outpatient attendance is 8.3% which shows a 0.1 percentage point decrease compared to the equivalent quarter of 2011/12.

NHS 111 Minimum Data Set – July Release

Call statistics to the NHS 111 service up to and including July 2012 from the ten sites providing this service and able to provide data at this time. The sites are: County Durham and Darlington, Lincolnshire, Luton, Nottingham City, Isle of Wight, Derbyshire, the North West, Croydon, Hillingdon and Inner North West London.

The main findings for July 2012 were:

In July, there were 96,002 calls to the 111 service, with 85% of these calls from people directly dialling 111. Scaled up, this would represent 12.1 million calls per year across England to the NHS 111 service.
In July, 99% of answered calls made to NHS111 where answered within 60 seconds. Of all calls offered 1% were abandoned after waiting longer than 30 seconds.
Average length of a call episode for data up to and including July was 9 minutes 15 seconds with 78% of callers receiving a triage and 3% of answered calls called back.
On average 30% of call time was handled by clinical staff for all calls up to and including July.
For the period between April 2011 to March 2012, 92% of callers were very or fairly satisfied with their NHS111 experience.
