Make an application

The Planning Portal is the Government’s official planning website. Every local authority in England and Wales accepts planning applications via the Planning Portal.

There are many benefits to creating and submitting applications online. It can be used to complete applications for consents including:

  • planning permission
  • lawful development certificates
  • listed building consent
  • conservation area consent

New to the online application service?

  • The service is straightforward and secure. The online process guides you through applications with help available at each stage.
  • Save your work and break away at any time. When you return to the application your previous entries will be waiting for you.
  • Save on costs of paper and postage when making copies of your application and supporting documents - and cut your carbon footprint at the same time.

Application Archiving

A new archiving policy came into force from 31 July 2012.

It is now not possible to:

  • Download supporting documents or forms from applications submitted more than two years ago.
  • Amend applications submitted more than two years ago.

Therefore, if you need copies of supporting documents or forms from submitted applications we recommend you download them within two years from the date of submission.

To find out more about this process and learn how you can download these documents, please read our application archiving FAQs.

You will still be able to:

  • View applications submitted more than two years ago.
  • Copy a submitted application from more than two years ago for reuse as a new ‘draft’ application. (However, this copy will only include the forms and not any supporting documents from the original application.)
  • Continue to access Supporting Documents and forms on all draft (non-submitted) applications

This is part of an ongoing process which will see all supporting documents from applications submitted more than two years ago being archived regularly.

If you want to discuss with us how you could continue to access Supporting Documents from applications submitted more than two years ago (at cost), please contact us on application.archiving@planningportal.gov.uk.
