6C - Green Infrastructure

NATIONAL FOREST CYCLING CENTRE

Off-road cycling is hugely popular, but recent studies by the Forestry Commission have highlighted a lack of facilities for the family, beginner and novice market.

The National Forest offers great potential to be a brilliant destination for this growing cycling market, particularly in the Heart of The Forest area where the five mile Conkers Circuit opened earlier this year.

Successful funding bids to the 6Cs Strategic Green Infrastructure Growth Fund and the Leicester & Leicester Sub-regional Investment Programme have brought the idea of a National Forest Cycling Centre nearer to reality.

The centre will provide a range of facilities to encourage families, young people and novices to cycle more, including:

  • A dedicated visitor centre and café
  • A bike shop with bike hire and a repair workshop.
  • Children's play areas.
  • Approximately eight miles of safe off-road trails with links into the wider Public Rights of Way network.
  • A mountain-bike skills development area.
  • Interpretative area with information on other routes exploring The National Forest and linking other visitor attractions.

Alan Leather, Funding and Partnerships Officer for the National Forest Company said:

'The next big step is to secure planning permission.  We have had positive discussions with the relevant authorities and gathered strong local support for the Centre, so we hope we are well on the way to adding a great new facility to the range of fun and healthy activities available in The National Forest.'

Project Update

The New Centre will open on Wednesday 1st June

The £1.5 million project features a stunning glass and timber building that uses the latest environmentally-friendly technology. It is heated by a wood chip boiler, generates energy through solar panels and recycles rainwater.
