Tuesday 16th November 2010
Wadenhoe House, Wadenhoe, Nr. Oundle, Peterborough
The Launch of the Nene Valley Strategic Plan took place on the 16th November to an invited audience of 60 chief executives, elected members, planners and landowners from the public, private and voluntary sectors, at Wadenhoe House, Wadenhoe.
The River Nene Regional Park (RNRP) and its partners have produced a Strategic Plan to support the delivery of the shared vision for the future of the Nene Valley and its hinterland between Northampton and Peterborough. This recognises the importance of the Nene Valley to Northamptonshire and sets out proposals, as a basis for partnership working, that will help to safeguard the environment, create new and enhance existing wildlife habitats, increase the accessibility of the Nene Valley for leisure, recreational, educational uses and, by working with landowners, improve land-use management and create further opportunities for public access and habitat creation.

The far-reaching plan also includes proposals to address climate change through the regeneration of the Rockingham Forest, which over a period of fifteen years will be increased by 1,200 hectares of new woodland. This will help to sequester or store carbon and be a major part of Northamptonshire's contribution to the national Low Carbon Transition Plan. These measures will increase the quality of life for local communities, reinforce the unique rural character of Northamptonshire, create opportunities for green employment and local businesses and make it a more attractive destination for tourism.
However the Plan, which was launched by Cllr Jim Harker, Leader of Northamptonshire County Council as the key note speaker, is not the end of the process. Rather it is a framework for the continued development and implementation of a series of initiatives that will have a positive effect on the wellbeing of existing and new communities, and on the long-term use and management of the Nene Valley. This is reflected in the shared Vision developed through stakeholder engagement:
"By 2021, the Nene Valley will be nationally recognised as an exemplar for the innovative management and enhancement of its natural and cultural environment, leading to a better quality of life for new and existing communities, whilst accommodating appropriate levels of growth."
Christopher Davidge, Chairman of the River Nene Regional Park said "The River Nene, its tributaries and valleys, form the backbone of Northamptonshire with a unifying natural feature that links settlements from the south-west of the county to those of the north-east. The successful implementation of the Strategic Plan will be of great benefit to the County and will call for full partnership co-operation from all concerned. Consequently, I am delighted that the Leader of Northamptonshire County Council endorses, and will be launching the Nene Valley Strategic Plan at Wadenhoe House, and that it is being supported by our many public, private and voluntary sector partners and stakeholders. I firmly believe that this collaborative and inclusive approach to the management of the wider Nene Valley will see Northamptonshire recognised nationally as an excellent place in which to live, work and visit."
