People from around the world come together to watch or play sport during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Games provide a platform that unites people from different backgrounds, cultures, and nations through a shared interest in sport.

The Get Set for the Olympic Truce for 16 – 19s resources Olympic Truce 16-19 - 569.34kb can be used in class, for peer-to-peer learning, debates and presentations, for research projects or to plan and develop activities inspired by the Olympic Truce ideal of building a better, more peaceful world through sport.

Help the students to explore how the Olympic Truce and the ideals upon which it is built are relevant to their own lives and communities. In addition to the resources above, look at films made by other young people through Film Nation: Shorts. Then download the factfile Olympic Truce fact file - 457.64kb and debate themes related to the Olympic Truce to help students come up with sport or culture activities aimed at bringing people together in their local community.

Encourage students to discuss the role sport could play in the Millennium Development Goals. Could students prepare a presentation for younger students, other schools or for people in the community? You could use the Olympic Truce learning poster - 257.57kb and the Olympic Truce Peace Corner poster - 247.39kb to explore what the Olympic Truce means to the students themselves and the communities in which they live. Use the white panel to record your ideas and to think about how you could work with your local and international partner schools to promote the idea of London 2012 bringing the world together through sport.
