5. Supporting growth in the radio (audio) sector

""

The UK radio sector has a proliferation of stations providing a wide selection of content including strong local news and current affairs. It also has the most vibrant market for digital radio in the world, with 42 per cent of homes having a digital radio device, demonstrating the consumer appetite for innovation across the sector.

Rapid growth in new technologies and online services has changed the face of the market with industry responding accordingly. For example, in 2011 the UK radio industry came together to launch the UK RadioPlayer which brings together BBC and commercial radio online services into one place, aiming to empower listeners to get the best out of the listening experience, providing the links to other relevant content such as a documentary on their favourite artist.

  • Obtain views on how growth in the sector can be achieved
  • Determine if there are clear, existing barriers to growth
  • Ensure the future regulatory framework is flexible and proportionate
