Organisation of the Department

How the Department is organised

The Department was set up to provide a stronger focus on delivering the Government’s transport strategy. The role of the centre of the Department is to set strategy and policy context, and to establish and manage relationships with the organisations that are responsible for delivery. The centre of the Department has been structured to reflect this role with a strong central strategy, delivery, communications and finance group.

Role of Executive Agencies and other transport bodies

The Department’s seven executive agencies are central to delivering the Governments transport priorities and services.

In developing a new structure for the Department, an important priority has been to strengthen the role and position of the agencies, ensuring they are fully engaged in shaping as well as delivering policy.

The Department also sponsors a number of other transport bodies, Non Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) and other organisations, with responsibility for delivery.
