Copyright FAQs

  1. Can I reproduce extracts of documents?

    In order to simplify the process and reduce unnecessary administration and delay for re-users of Crown copyright material, extracts of up to 250 words from official sources may be re-used without the need to apply for a licence.

  2. What is covered?

    This covers both core and value added text. It does not, however, extend to:

    • text that appears in tables, diagrams and forms;
    • cases where a department states that the material may not be re-used. For example, material that is frequently updated and where out of date information could potentially affect the health, safety and security of individuals;
    • the re-use of official imprints and departmental logos unless you have the permission of the department concerned.

  3. What do I need to do?

    You may re-use extracts of text provided that:

    • it is re-used accurately;
    • you identify the source(give the title of the document from which the extract is taken) and state that it is Crown copyright. You must also use the following copyright notice: Crown copyright material is reproduced with the permission of the Controller of HMSO and the Queen’s Printer for Scotland;
    • it is not re-used for the purpose of advertising or promoting a particular product or service;
    • out of date material is not presented as though it was current.

  4. Can I reproduce graphs/charts/tables from crown copyright documents?

    Like other Crown Copyright material graphs, charts and tables may be reproduced free of charge in any format or medium for research, private study or for internal circulation within an organisation. This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not used in a misleading context. You must identify the source (give the title of the document from which the item is taken) and state that it is Crown copyright. You must also use the following copyright notice: Crown copyright material is reproduced with the permission of the Controller of HMSO and the Queen’s Printer for Scotland.

    To reproduce graphs, tables or charts from Crown copyright documents for any other use, you must have a Crown Copyright Click-use licence. However, graphs, tables and charts from waived Crown copyright documents may be reproduced freely without a licence. For more information and/or a licence application form, please visit the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI) web site. You can also apply for a licence by email or by writing to:

  5. Can we host a pdf of a report on our own website?

    The Treasury advises users to establish hypertext links to pages or files within the HM Treasury website. However we do not permit pages or files to be loaded into frames on your own site. HM Treasury pages or files must load into the user’s entire window. If you would prefer to host/reproduce a HM Treasury document, please use the following guidelines:

    Reproduction for limited/internal use
    Crown Copyright protected material (excluding our logo and other copyrighted images) may be reproduced free of charge in any format or medium for research, private study or for internal circulation within an organisation. This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not used in a misleading context.

    Reproduction for any other use
    Certain Crown copyright material is subject to a waiver. Documents covered by the waiver can, unlike other Crown Copyright documents, be reproduced freely without a licence. Categories of Crown material for which copyright has been waived include government press notices, legislation and explanatory notes on the legislation, ministerial speeches and consultation documents. For a full list and more information please see the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI) web site.

    If you wish to reproduce Crown copyright material for any other use, you must apply for a Crown Copyright Click-use licence.
