In our first of three articles on widget architectures, we covered innovate's first generation of widgets: embedded code snippets, with all inline styles and javascript. (As well as some more clever widget engines which allowed configuration and customisation of widgets before downloading.)
Now in part two, we are going to run down the next phase of our widget evolution: generation two, which we implemented as full-featured web environments encapsulated in iframes.

As you will not have overlooked, there has within HMG been a significant and growing trend toward opening up government data, as well pushing data out and making it as accessible and useful as possible.

Innovate has added a new widget to the stable, a travel news ticker.
The data comes from the syndication feeds we developed for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. You can read a blog post on it by Jimmy Leach, Head of Digital at FCO.

Widgets developed by Directgov Innovate have now racked up over 2.3 million views since launch so we thought we'd share some numbers with you.

Directgov Innovate has launched a beta syndication platform for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) which allows you to use FCO travel advice on your own websites and applications.
The feeds include a country list, summary or full travel advice and embassy/consular contact information in Atom, Json and vCard formats.
You can access the feeds and read the terms and conditions of use here.

Directgov is releasing a dataset of ratings for each of the information articles on the Directgov website.
The data will be made available via data.gov.uk, from Friday 1st October.
The initial release includes data for March and the first couple of weeks of April 2010. More data will be released in the coming days so please check back.
