On 6 February 2012 The Queen will have reigned for 60 years and her Diamond Jubilee gives us a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute and to celebrate this joyous and historic milestone in the life of the nation.
A Diamond Jubilee is truly special. Even in Britain’s long royal history, there has only ever been one such Jubilee: that of Victoria, The Queen’s great-great-grandmother.
For The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, The Royal Mint is striking a Diamond Jubilee £5 coin, uniting two specially commissioned designs by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS for this once-in-a-lifetime occasion. The obverse features a faithful new portrait of The Queen as she is today, crowned and wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, and will feature only on this coin for 2012. The reverse recalls the portrait of The Queen which featured on her first coins from 1953, and includes decorative leaves reminiscent of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee medal. In another link to the coinage of Victoria, the Latin words DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS (May God Guide My Steps), which first appeared on the gold £5 coin of 1839, complete the design. Both portraits have been approved by Her Majesty The Queen.
A 24-coin collection of silver Proof coins is also available, marking The Queen’s 60-year reign and her role as Head of the Commonwealth. Each coin features a design recalling events and institutions that are important to The Queen. The collection includes coins from more than 12 Commonwealth countries and comes in a beautiful presentation case and numbered Certificate of Authenticty.
