Organisation overview

In accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority.

ONS is the UK Government’s main survey organisation and main producer of official statistics.

The National Statistician is Jil Matheson, who took up the post on 1 September 2009.

The National Statistician is the Chief Executive of ONS, as well as being head of the Government Statistics Service (GSS). However, from 1 September 2009, the National Statistician has delegated the role of Chief Executive of ONS to the Director General, Stephen Penneck, to allow her to focus on overseeing official statistics as a whole and strengthening the GSS.

The National Statistician remains the principal accounting officer for ONS.
