Site audience and purpose
This site is intended to cover the information needs of many different potential audiences – the general public, consumers, farmers and growers, the food industry and associated professionals, schoolchildren, students, teachers and academics and so on.
It aims structured to present simple information first, with an indication of more detail further into the site. Since there is a large amount and wide variety of information on our site, you may find our A-Z index to be a useful aid to finding the information you want.

Downloading files or documents
You are advised to save large files or files that you need to work on (interactive PDF forms, Excel or Word documents) onto your computer. In general, right-click on a link and select “save as” or “save target as”.
This site may include files of the following types. You may need to have the correct software loaded on your computer to make full use of the information available.
Documents marked PDF are saved in Portable Document Format (PDF). To read them you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader or a similar tool – most computers will already have suitable software installed. The Acrobat Reader software is available for downloading free of charge. We aim to make PDF documents accessible without the latest versions of the reader software but you may sometimes find it helpful to make sure that you have a current version.
Viewers with visual difficulties may find it useful to investigate services provided by Adobe to improve the accessibility of Adobe Acrobat documents – http://access.adobe.com
Note: We do not normally publish scanned documents but very occasionally this is unavoidable. We will try to make such documents as accessible as possible (including through automatic recognition of scanned text) but if you are unable to read any scanned documents, do contact us and we will endeavour to provide the material in a more accessible format.
Word or Rich Text
We occasionally make documents available in Microsoft Word or Rich Text format. You should be able to open such files in most common word-processing software. We aim to make such documents accessible without your needing the latest versions of software.
Excel (xls) or CSV
We occasionally make data or spreadsheets available in Excel format, which you should be able to open in most spreadsheet software. Where possible we make data available in ”Comma Separated Variable” format which is a more open and universal format – it is usually easiest to open such files in spreadsheet software.
