UKTI makes export a snip for Essex-based online hairdressing company
And now the company, My Hairdressers Ltd, which employs 12 people, has found a market for its training courses overseas with help from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).
My Hairdressers provides online training to over 50,000 hairdressing professionals worldwide via video tutorials and downloadable pdf support documents as well as dedicated content to meet the requirements of curriculum and awarding bodies, such as NVQ for the UK and its equivalent in Australia.
The company has been working with UKTI since May 2011 to expand its business abroad. So far this has yielded great results, with seven licensing agreements in place in the Middle East, South Korea, Russia, Benelux, Italy, China and the most recent in Greece and Cyprus.
Mark Butcher, Chief Executive of My Hairdressers said:
“We realised early on that exporting our online training programme around the world was the natural way to expand. As a successful UK-based businessman I thought I knew it all, but it turned out that I didn’t. When I signed up to UKTI’s Passport to Export programme our business strategy changed completely. We realised we needed to do a lot of research before we even thought about selling. UKTI has helped us immensely to understand what it takes to reach overseas markets.
“Since signing up with UKTI last year we have visited the USA and Australia. In Australia we were encouraged to take part in UKTI’s Export Market Research Scheme before rushing into trying to sell our activities. The research paid off, resulting in a deal to develop a complete range of bespoke support materials for Australia’s hairdressing industry. Add to this the recent launch in South Korea and five more planned for 2012, the partnership is playing a significant role in our success.
Ashley Almond, International Trade Adviser, who has worked with the company said:
“My Hairdressers is an ambitious young company, focussed on achieving global success for its range of online hairdressing training products. It has developed an enormous number of loyal customers around the world thanks to the quality and quantity of its material.
“With regular mentoring and support, Mark Butcher has been able to refine his company’s growth strategy and focus on key markets critical to its success and to access funding to help him undertake essential field market research. He and his small but energetic team are committed to global growth.”
