HRH The Duke of York visits Indonesia – April 2011

HRH The Duke of York visited Jakarta from 5-7 April in his role as UK Special Representative for International Trade and Investment.

During his visit, HRH secured high level access important to the development of the UK-Indonesia trade and investment relationship through his calls on the President, the Co-ordinating Minister of Economic Affairs, the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Trade.

He also met the Chairman of the Investment Co-ordinating Board at a lunch with British investors in Indonesia and the Vice Minister of Transport at an infrastructure round table. The infrastructure round table, which was attended by a range of senior British and Indonesian companies and officials, provided an opportunity for The Duke to introduce and demonstrate support for UK companies interested in the development of Indonesia’s network of ports.

The Duke also joined a meeting of the Alliance of Low Carbon Businesses in Indonesia (ALBI), a grouping of Indonesian and British companies that are keen to help the Government of Indonesia make a successful transition to a low carbon economy. The Duke subsequently deployed messages from the group in his meetings with the President and Ministers.

The Duke was able to support two examples of British success in Indonesia. He joined with the Indonesian Deputy Minister for Trade and Sir David John, Chairman of British Standards Group (BSI) to launch BSI in Indonesia, one of the UK’s most recent investments in the market. He also presented three companies with BSI certificates.

At a separate event to acknowledge the work of the British community in Indonesia, The Duke witnessed the signing of an agreement between the University of Newcastle and the University of Indonesia on a joint PhD programme.
