Planning Policy Statement 7: Sustainable Development in Rural Areas

Planning Policy Statement 7 (PPS7) sets out the Government's planning policies for rural areas, including country towns and villages and the wider, largely undeveloped countryside up to the fringes of larger urban areas.

This replaces Planning Policy Guidance 7: The Countryside - Environmental Quality and Economic and Social Development (PPG7) published in February 1997.

Please note: The economic development sections of PPS7 have been replaced by Planning Policy Statement 4: Planning for Sustainable Economic Growth (PPS4) published on 29 December 2009.

The Department has published a consultation on the proposed Planning Policy Statement: Planning for a Natural and Healthy Environment. This sets out streamlined and consolidated planning policy including landscape protection, soil and agricultural land quality, and forestry (paragraphs 21-23, 28-29 and 33 of PPS7).
