Scientific surveys provide important information on consumer attitudes and understanding to allergy and allergy labelling. This can be used to help food businesses give helpful information to customers who need to avoid certain ingredients because of an allergy.
The Food Intolerance Research Programme aims to investigate the causes and mechanisms underlying food intolerance, including food allergy. The work has in recent years focused on severe food allergy, in particular peanut allergy, and a major aim is to identify risk factors associated with the development of food allergy so that appropriate information can be provided for consumers.
The Agency, in partnership with the Anaphylaxis Campaign, held a conference on ‘Communicating the science of food allergy’ in London on 14 March 2011. The audience was a broad mix, from academia, the food industry and people with, or catering for people with, food allergy.
