Update on beef from Northern Ireland

The Food Standards Agency is today advising consumers not to be concerned about eating beef from Northern Ireland. Dioxin results from three Northern Irish herds affected by contaminated feed have been received, they exceed permitted limits but the risk to public health remains very low. Any cattle and beef that have been withheld since Tuesday 9 December will not enter the food chain.

Irish pork back on the shelves

Measures are now in place to restore supplies of Irish pork and bacon to consumers. Pork from animals reared, slaughtered and processed in Northern Ireland remain unaffected by this incident. In the UK, shops, manufacturers and caterers that can trace the origin of any pork directly to a farm that is unaffected by contaminated feed are able to continue selling their products.

The type of bacteria (called Clostridium botulinum) that can cause botulism, a severe type of food poisoning, has not been detected in the products. The Agency has issued an updated Food Alert for Action about Ears and Tongue Roll from Lithuania, labelled with the 'Samsono' brand. This is a ready to eat pork product. Further investigations have revealed that the affected product has also been imported into the UK by Lituanica UK Ltd and distributed to 22 shops in England and one shop in Northern Ireland.

The FSA today has published new evidence, which shows the UK’s average daily salt consumption has fallen from 9.5g to 8.6g since 2000. Although the recent figures show an encouraging decline in salt levels, more challenging targets are needed to meet the Government's target of 6g a day.

The Food Standards Agency has received reports from local authorities of the seizure of 70cl bottles of counterfeit Glen's Vodka which contains higher levels of methanol than normally found in authentic Glen's Vodka. The levels of methanol are unlikely to be a health hazard but, as a precautionary measure, the Agency is advising people not to drink the counterfeit vodka.
