When we provide services, we want to make them easy, useful and reliable. Where services are delivered on the internet, this sometimes involves placing small amounts of information on your device, for example, computer or mobile phone. These include small files known as cookies. They cannot be used to identify you personally.
These pieces of information are used to improve services for you through, for example:
- enabling a service to recognise your device so you don't have to give the same information several times during one task
- recognising that you may already have given a username and password so you don't need to do it for every web page requested
- measuring how many people are using services, so they can be made easier to use and there's enough capacity to ensure they are fast
You can manage these small files yourself and learn more about them through 'Internet browser cookies - what they are and how to manage them on Direct.gov.uk. See link below.

Third party advertising cookies
Government uses advertising to:
- remind you of important tasks as a citizen, such as making a tax return,
- inform you about changes in the law, as we did when smoking laws were changed, and
- encourage behaviour that leads to better health and well-being and lower costs on health services, such as exercising, eating healthily and safe driving.
We want to make sure that any money spent on advertising is well spent. For this purpose it is useful to find out where and when people see online adverts. Third party advertising cookies are small data files that are written to your device when you visit a non-government website that displays a government advertisement. Third party cookies do not store information that identifies you or knows about you as an individual.
Doubleclick
If you have responded from another site to a government link or advertisement, to ensure that we advertise in the right places to the right people and deliver good use of taxpayers' money.
