I stumbled across a book purporting to have the cure to cancer – if only things were that simple! Fortunately I’m not the type of person that’s easily drawn in, but I was still intrigued to discover what the author thought this miracle cure was.

The news this morning that Sainsbury’s, in partnership with Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), want food relabelled so that it can be frozen up until its 'use by' date, not just on the day of purchase, is welcome, but not new. That uneaten chicken pie in the fridge is fine to go in the freezer right up until the 'use by' date. Our guidelines have always stated that it's fine to freeze food after the day of purchase as long as it has been correctly stored. We hope other supermarkets start highlighting this to their customers.

I woke up this morning to hear that one of my great footballing heroes, Socrates, has died aged just 57 years. Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, to give him his full name, was the captain of one of the great Brazilian sides and he played his football with style and intelligence. For him, football was an art – rather different from the modern midfield machines!
