Update on review of evidence on trans fatty acids
Monday 29 October 2007
Secretary of State for Health Alan Johnson has asked for the Agency's advice on the evidence in relation to trans fatty acids (TFAs) and whether or not they should be restricted.
The Agency has been asked to provide advice on:
- the available evidence on the health impacts of TFAs
- an international comparison, both in terms of TFA intakes and action taken, particularly the measures implemented in New York City and Denmark
- options for unilateral action to restrict TFAs in foods, covering voluntary and legislative actions, and the associated legal implications
- other relevant considerations with respect to food reformulation and alternatives to TFAs, particularly their impact on health
The Agency will seek the views of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, and discuss the issue at Board level.
A meeting to seek the views of stakeholders is being held today.
As the Agency has been asked to provide its advice quickly – by 19 December 2007 – the issue will be discussed at the Agency’s next open Board meeting on 13 December.
