Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (ORSAS)

ORSAS was set up by the Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1979 to attract high-quality international students to the United Kingdom to undertake research by providing for the difference in fees charged to overseas students. The scheme is funded through the four UK higher education funding bodies (for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

From 2006 onwards, ORSAS award holders were selected internally by participating HEIs. These institutions receive an annual grant from HEFCE to fund ORSAS. The grant was allocated by formula and set to run from 2006-07 until the end of 2008-09.

Following the 2008 review of the scheme, ORSAS funding will be phased out gradually over 2009-10 and 2010-11. Further information on this decision can be found in HEFCE Circular letter 18/2008. This change applies to England only; other UK Funding bodies have yet to make a decision about their awards.
