Early years and childcare: For childminders

The visit - part of registration for childminding

This page tells you about the visit that is part of registering.

The visit is a key part of the application process for the Early Years Register.

We do not usually include a visit for Childcare Register applications, but you should still read below for important information.

The visit for applicants for the Early Years Register

One we have received your application, we will visit the premises that you plan to use and interview you. The interview includes checking that you will be able to deliver and are familiar with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

We carry out checks on you and anyone connected to your application; this includes anyone who may live or work on the premises where you intend to provide childminding. This includes with the Criminal Records Bureau checks.

To help you prepare for your visit, use our Early Years Register: preparing for your registration visit guidance booklet. It has space for notes that you can refer to during your visit; and you do not have to give your booklet to the inspector.

At the interview, the inspector will tell you anything that needs to be done before we can grant your registration; so you may have some actions to complete before we confirm your registration.

The inspector will also tell you about any conditions that may come with your registration, including the number of children you may care for.

Once we have the results of checks, completed the visit and you have completed any actions, we will tell as soon as possible if we have decided to register you as a provider.

The visit for applicants for the Childcare Register

We do not usually visit or interview you unless there is a reason to do so arising from the checks we carry out, but if you have lived in another country in the last five years we may need a Certificate of Good Conduct from that country.

We will register you if our checks have found you to be suitable.

Are you registered?
