Our achievements

Yorkshire Forward prides itself on being an outcome-driven agency. We have met or exceeded all of our Corporate Plan targets, and remain the leanest of all the regional development agencies in England.

In 2008-09, we:
  • created or safeguarded 23,635 jobs
  • assisted 10,030 to gain employment
  • assisted 6,221 people with their higher level skills
  • created 1,410 businesses
  • attracted over £216m of regeneration investment.

Some recent highlights 2008/09:

  • Responding quickly and thoroughly to economic shocks, particularly the economic downturn, working with partners to minimize the impact of associated redundancies in the region.
  • Launching the £1.4m Business Link Health Check package in December 2008, offering a comprehensive support and advice for companies affected by the economic downturn.
  • Partnering with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) on the Train to Gain Enhancement Fund, helping fill gaps in skills and workforce development, investing £9.12m.
  • Taking the lead in developing the evidence base for the benefits of investing in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and stimulating commercial interest and cooperation.
  • Funding a pilot programme, the Open Madrassah Network in Bradford, aimed at increasing the GCSE attainment of young people in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities.
  • Working with the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) to build the first UK building fuelled by ‘green’ hydrogen, in response to efforts to accelerate the region’s move towards carbon neutrality.
  • Introducing the £5m Transitional Loan Fund in February 2009 to help businesses tackle the credit crunch, providing Small and Medium Enterprises with working capital to help them maintain liquidity in their businesses.
  • Championing enterprise in Scarborough through a renaissance programme which has resulted in Scarborough being named the most enterprising place in the UK.
  • Increasing Export Activity among the region’s businesses by supporting the Targeted Export Support Scheme (TESS) and working closely with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), including the sponsorship of the Going Global event.
  • Redeveloping Bridlington Spa, which is now a major event and entertainment centre and a key venue for touring bands.
  • Providing essential vocational training to the chemical industry through the development of the Centre for the Assessment of Technical Competence Humber (CATCH)

When it comes to environmental performance, Yorkshire Forward have certification to ISO 14001 and the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

In 2008, Yorkshire Forward achieved Gold in the Business in the Community Environmental Index and was one of only 12 organisations scoring 90% or more.

Yorkshire Forward has Investors in People accreditation, a business improvement tool designed to help all kinds of organisations develop performance through their people.
