Whitby's Green Lane Centre wins top regeneration award

The Green Lane Centre in Whitby has won the regeneration ‘Neighbourhood Renewal Project of the Year’ at an awards ceremony held in London on 23 September.

The project was nominated by Yorkshire Forward’s rural team and beat off stiff competition from three other projects based in the south to win this accolade which demonstrates the project’s people led approach.

The Judges in the Regeneration and Renewal annual awards announced:

“The Green Lane Centre in Whitby is a superb example of a project that was led by local people and charities who drew the local authorities and grant giving bodies behind them.”

The idea for the new centre, which is situated on the site of the old Green Lane play centre, came together in 2003 when Scarborough Borough Council and Yorkshire Forward worked with local residents and members of the Green Lane Steering Group to develop the new centre.  After consultation, design and construction the building was handed over to Coast and Moors Voluntary Action in summer 2008.

It was the suggestions gathered from local people that led to the design that incorporates IT facilities, training rooms, eight small business units, a community hall, a gallery/conference room and a garden play area.

The centre, which was funded by Yorkshire Forward, the European Regional Development Fund and North Yorkshire county Council, boasts excellent design with state of the art environmental features including geothermal heating, a green roof and is insulated to a high standard.

Councillor Bastiman, Scarborough Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Strategic Planning & Community Development said:

“I am very pleased that this project has won a much deserved award.  It has been a community led process and everyone is thrilled with the finished building.  I would like to express my personal thanks to all those who have helped to make it happen.”

Andy Tordoff., Assistant Director of Yorkshire Forward added:

“The Green Lane Centre is a great success because this multi functional facility meets the needs of the community.  It delivers what the local community asked for.  Yorkshire Forward is proud to have been involved”.

The centre’s management team are thrilled with the award:

“People were enthused and came forward with ideas, sometime sketched on scraps of paper and consultation workshops led residents to make detailed decisions on aspects of the building’s design.”
