Meet our management team

Yorkshire Forward’s management team is strengthened by talented and experienced people of vision—who have a commitment and a genuine desire to see Yorkshire & Humber’s economy flourish, and to make our region a better place to live, work and invest.

They join us from all kinds of backgrounds, and offer Yorkshire Forward invaluable experience and insight from the public, private and third sectors.

Ruth Redfern, assistant chief executive

Highlights from Ruth’s diverse career include running DATA, a training project for disabled adults which became a European Centre of Excellence under her leadership; being elected chief whip of Bradford Council; and lecturing in local, national and European government at Bradford University. She was also a founder member of Bradford Congress, a director of the Training & Enterprise Council and the chair of Bradford City Centre Group. Ruth joined fledgling Yorkshire Forward as policy manager in 1999 and became assistant chief executive in 2006. Amongst many other things, she is responsible for the smooth running of our Board Secretariat and relationship management with our region’s politicians.

Simon Hill, executive director of business

In a career spanning 20 years, Simon Hill has worked at every type of business—from fledgling start-ups to major companies. At Yorkshire Forward, he heads up the team responsible for business growth in Yorkshire & Humber, including the expansion of European markets. Simon believes passionately in the future growth of industry. He’s heavily involved in inward investment, encouraging companies to invest in our region.

Simon Foy, executive director of strategy

Simon has the lead role in the strategic direction of Yorkshire Forward, including the development, delivery, review and evaluation of the Regional Economic Strategy (RES) and subsequently the Integrated Regional Strategy (IRS). He is also responsible for the policy development of the Sustainable Development, Transport, Planning and Housing agendas, and all things connected to the Sub-national Review. Simon has a background in Economic and Policy Research and has worked both in the private and public sectors. He has a wide range of experience in the field of local and regional economic development and analysis.  He has conducted work for the OECD, European Commission, national government departments, regional government offices and local and regional partnerships. His strategy development and research experience is coupled with a practical knowledge of the implementation of economic development and labour market initiatives gained whilst working as a practitioner.

Trevor Shaw, executive director of finance

Trevor has overall responsibility for internal affairs at Yorkshire Forward, including finance, ICT,performance and auditing. Born and educated in South Yorkshire, he started his career in local government before moving to the private sector in 1988. After seven years in the IT sector, he returned to the public sector as finance director at North Hull Housing Action Trust. In 1998, Trevor assisted with setting up Yorkshire Forward and has been with us ever since. He also sits on the board of our Sustainable Futures Company.

Jan Anderson, executive director of environment

Jan held a number of important roles in the South East before joining us. She was head of urban renaissance and policy at the South East England Development Agency, head of the London Docklands Development Corporation sponsorship team and head of the ODPM Secretariat, supporting Sir John Egan on the Egan Review of Skills. Jan was also director of corporate affairs and government relations for the Dome’s New Millennium Experience, and headed up several regeneration-related teams for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Urban Policy Unit. At Yorkshire Forward, she covers our property, rural economy and urban renaissance agendas.
