Finding a place
Contact details for providers and information on the availability of places can be found via the GTP search facility.
Some training providers will help you find a school, while others will expect you to find a school before applying. You will need to check with your chosen provider with regards to:
- how they handle school placements
- the training and subjects they offer
- their selection processes
This information may be available on the provider’s details page. Many GTP training providers also have websites and offer advice by telephone or e-mail.
GTP training providers usually recruit well in advance of the programme starting dates and application deadlines will vary between training providers. Information about when a provider accepts applications can be found on their details page.
If your training provider does not offer help with finding an employing school, you will need to find a school willing to employ you on the GTP. Some training providers may offer advice on how to find and apply to a school.
Submitting your application
Once you have chosen a GTP training provider – and found an employing school if required by that training provider – you can then apply for a place on the GTP.
Applications for the GTP in England must be made electronically through the TDA website. Please do not send applications by post or e-mail as these will not be accepted.
To apply to your chosen provider, please click on the ‘Apply’ button that appears on the provider’s information page.
Please note that the ‘Apply’ button only appears when your chosen provider is accepting applications for the GTP.
Application processes differ between individual providers. It is vital that you have a clear understanding of a provider’s process before applying.
You may find information on a provider’s process on their individual details page. Many providers also have websites or can be contacted directly by phone or e-mail for advice on their application process.
After receiving your application, the training provider will assess it and contact you about next steps. All communication about the progress of your application will then be directly between you and the training provider. The TDA is unable to enter into any communication with applicants on the progress of applications to the GTP.
Bear in mind that competition for places on the GTP is strong and there are many more applicants than places available.
GTP providers do not operate in the same way in Wales. Applications for employment-based teacher training programmes in Wales are made to the Welsh Assembly Government.
