Who must have full registration?
If you have QTS and teach in a maintained school, non-maintained special school or pupil referral unit you must be fully registered with the GTC.
By 'teach' we mean:
- planning and preparing lessons and courses for pupils
- delivering lessons to pupils
- assessing or reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
The requirement to register applies to full-time, part-time and supply teachers.
If you have QTS and teach in an academy, whether you have to register depends on the academy’s funding agreement. Please check with your academy. At most academies, and almost all new ones, teachers do have to register.
If you have QTS and teach in an independent school, whether you have to register depends on your contract of employment. Please check with your school. Even if you do not have to register, you can choose to.
If you have QTS and teach in a further education establishment you must register with the Institute for Learning.
If you have QTS and teach in a sixth form college you must register with either the Institute for Learning or the GTC.
If you have QTS and work in some other aspect of education, or are retired, or simply wish to keep in touch with the teaching profession: you can choose to register with the GTC.
If you wish to teach in Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales you must register with the appropriate General Teaching Council.
