From ideas to adoption

The NHS is routinely recognised as ‘world class’ for inventing innovative new devices, technologies and processes which all serve to improve health care for millions of patients.  However, the main theme of the recently published ‘NHS Chief Executive Review of Innovation’, is that more emphasis needs to be placed on the successful diffusion and adoption of proven innovations.

Releasing the potential

Ensuring this large scale adoption takes place is the task of every person working within the NHS and those accessing its services - we must all contribute. The highest scoring question on our culture for innovation tool is ‘I am capable of generating new ideas’. The senior leaders of NHS organisations have a responsibility to ensure that the culture within their organisations harnesses this potential.  Our EBD (Experience Based Design) Approach shows the power of staff working in partnership with patients and carers to make improved services a reality.

What can you do?
Everyone who works in the NHS needs to actively explore how they can adopt and adapt great practice from others.  We are currently testing a practical tool that synthesises the best evidence available on the factors that support the spread of innovation - to become involved in the beta testing email spread@institute.nhs.uk.
