Care to Learn

Care to Learn provides financial support to teenage parents who want to continue their education and need help with the cost of childcare and any associated travel. It pays up to £160 a week (£175 in London boroughs) for each child and is paid direct to the childcare provider.

Young parents looking for information on the scheme should visit our Directgov site.

For those who advise young parents and would like more information on Care to Learn please contact us or visit the Care to Learn site.

Care to Learn Consultation

The Care to Learn scheme will continue to be available for parents in England who are under 20 when they start a course in 2011/12. Care to Learn will continue beyond this academic year.

The Department for Education (DfE) need to consider what changes to Care to Learn might be necessary from September 2012 to ensure that support reaches those who most need it.

The DfE is carrying out a 9-week consultation on some changes to the scheme that will ensure its sustainability into the future. They are consulting on four options:

  • Moving to a discretionary fund;
  • Changes to the maximum weekly rates payable;
  • Linking support to income; and
  • Changes to the age criteria.

You are invited to take part in the e-consultation, which is available at www.education.gov.uk/consultations until 28th October 2011.
