This report summarises the results of a project carried out by the East of England Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (EEMLAC) during 2003-4, which had the aim of providing the new organization with basic information about the archive repositories in the region. The project was funded by MLA (then Resource): The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and was recommended as a first step in the regional archive strategy, Eastern Promise.
The project forms the first phase of ‘creating an archive network’ for the region, as set out in Eastern Promise, which was written for the East of England Regional Archive Council by Chris Pickford, an archive consultant. Chris built up a substantial body of data while preparing the strategy, and he passed this over to EEMLAC at the start of the project. During the course of the project Chris also sent us preprints of two important papers he had written, and made numerous helpful comments on an earlier draft of this report. It is no exaggeration to say that Chris’s data, and the innovative classification of archives which he introduced in Eastern Promise were both critical to the outcome of the project.
