Archives in the East Midlands - Final Report

Main Document 0.34 MB

MLA East Midlands & Jonathan Rhys-Lewis (Preservation Consultant)

The purpose of the research was to determine the extent of archive holdings in the region and management issues relating to these holdings, particularly archives cared for and made available by libraries, museums, galleries, businesses and other organisations whose main business is not as an archive repository. The project was funded by MLA East Midlands and forms part of the action plan for the MLA Partnership’s Archive Development Programme; Leadership, Advocacy & Research, archives have high national, regional and local profile, resulting in greater use, and are sustained by increased investment through research & evidence.

The research is intended to complement work previously carried out in other regions. They are:

- East of England. Archives In the East of England, East of England Archive Mapping Project 2003-4

- North East. North East Regional Survey of Archives

- South East. Understanding Archival Institutions in The South East Region

- South West. The Directory of South West Museums Libraries & Archives

We have also used the categorisation of “levels of activity” for archive repositories developed by Chris Pickford (archive consultant) and we have used background information from Understanding Archival Institutions in the South East Region with the permission of MLA South East.
