The main purpose of these statistics is to give a broad overall perspective of the museums, libraries and archives sector in England.

In some tables, historical data are included for comparison.

Where necessary, incomplete data have been grossed up to give estimates for the whole of England, which allows comparisons over time. Figures in italics are based on relatively sparse data sets, necessitating a considerable degree of estimation. A dash (–) indicates data were not available at the time of compilation.

All data are for England only unless stated otherwise.
