The Department publishes, in real-time, the energy used in its headquarters building. Raw energy consumption data for the headquarters building is also compiled once every 24 hours and is provided in a format that can be reused.
See how much electricity and natural gas is being used in the Department for Transport headquarters building.
What you see is what we're using
Usage data is continuously captured from the building's main utility meters so you can see how much energy is being used today, this week, this month, this quarter and this year (since 16 July 2010).
Units, cost and CO2e
Select cost to see the cost of consumption or select CO2e to see the carbon dioxide emissions associated with our energy use.
Cost rates
The costs are calculated using the following rates:
- Electricity: Day Rate 7.0 pence per kWh, Night Rate 4.0 pence per kWh
- Natural gas: 1.5 pence per kWh
Carbon factors
Conversion factors are based on Defra's 2009 guidance (PDF - 1219 KB)
- Electricity: 0.541 kgCO2 per kWh
- Natural gas: 0.184 kgCO2 per kWh

DfT's measures to reduce energy consumption and costs, and carbon emissions
To make our HQ building more efficient…
- We are installing new motion-sensitive and consequently more energy-efficient lighting in Great Minster House North as part of our refurbishment project.
- We have installed pulse meters on the four electrical and two gas meters that can be read automatically and remotely and performance is now published on line on the DfT website. We can now identify and rectify any anomalies.
- We have installed additional meters to identify the energy consumption of specific areas, items of plant or equipment. These are providing more detailed data on energy use within the building.
- We have switched off and isolated all unnecessary lighting in reception areas.
- We have installed timers on all under-sink hot water heaters in tea-points so that they are not on in the evenings or at weekends.
- We have switched off and isolated all heaters in stairwells.
We are currently assessing the CO2 benefits of the above measures and have posted our Display our Energy Certificate (PDF 118 KB) externally on our HQ buildings.
To inform our employees and encourage them to change their behaviour…
- We have reminded them of the importance of reducing energy consumption and costs through a series of messages and articles in our weekly online Bulletin and our in-house ezine. There have been more than 2,000 hits on these pages.
- We are running a series of polls on the home page of our intranet to remind employees of energy-saving behaviour. Of those polled, an average of 62% indicated that they
- turned off the PC monitor while away from their desk for a meeting or lunch
- turned off their PC and printer(s) when they left the office at night
- walked up or down the stairs instead of using the lift
- used the video- and telephone-conferencing facilities instead of travelling to a meeting.
- We are displaying our weekly energy use and intermittent reminders on how to save energy and cut costs on the news screens throughout the Department.
