Freight Facilities Grant (FFG)

Following the outcome of the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) in October 2010, the Freight Facilities Grant scheme in England was officially closed in January 2011.

Whilst funding will no longer be provided to new schemes, DfT will continue to monitor the performance of past schemes, with a view to ensuring the benefits as anticipated at the time of applying, are delivered.

The DfT continues to support modal shift through the operating grants it provides through the Mode Shift Revenue Support (MSRS) and Waterborne Freight Grant schemes (WFG). Indeed following the CSR a future budget for the operating grants was confirmed for future years as £20m for 2011-12, £19m for 2012-13, with a further indicative £19m for both 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Further information on the MSRS scheme can be found by clicking here.

Guide to Mode Shift Revenue Support (MSRS) scheme (Freight Best Practice website)

The MSRS scheme assists companies with the operating costs associated with running rail or inland water freight transport instead of road, where rail or inland waterway transport is more expensive. It is designed to facilitate and support modal shift, generating environmental and wider social benefits from reduced lorry journeys on Britain’s roads. The MSRS guide outlines the criteria and processes in place for applying for support from the scheme.
