Employer’s guide to Redundancy
Part 1 of 10 in this guide.
Introduction
If you need to make some or all of your employees redundant, you must follow a fair redundancy dismissal procedure, consult with your employees (and their representatives) and keep them informed.
I want to make an employee(s) redundant
You can make an employee(s) redundant when a job they are doing must disappear, eg your business stops operating, relocates or some staff do work that is no longer necessary.
Your employee(s) may be entitled to statutory redundancy payment (SRP).
Redundancy is not the same as lay-offs or short-time working. However, these employees might be able to claim statutory redundancy payment (SRP).
I want to make my apprentice redundant
If you employ an apprentice who’s about to lose their job, they can continue their apprenticeship through full-time training for 6 months.
I’m in Northern Ireland
If you’re in Northern Ireland, some of the business laws in this guide won’t apply. For information call the DEL Redundancy Payments Helpline on 0800 58 58 11.
