Privacy & Cookies

Last updated: 26th May 2011

When we provide services, we want to make them easy, useful and reliable. This sometimes involves placing small amounts of information on your device, for example, computer or mobile phone. These include small files known as cookies. They cannot be used to identify you personally.

These pieces of information are used to improve services for you through, for example:

  • enabling a service to recognise your device so you don't have to give the same information during one task
  • recognising that you have already given a username and password so you don't need to enter it for every web page requested
  • measuring how many people are using services, so they can be made easier to use and that there is enough capacity to ensure they are fast

You can manage these small files yourself and learn more about them from AllAboutCookies.org.

Our use of cookies

The list below shows all of the cookies that are set by Alpha.gov.uk and the third-party services we use. If you have any queries about these cookies or would like more information about them, please get in touch.

geo We display the 'friendly name' on every page, and use the other data to match services to you. eg. rather than providing a list of all police stations, we can usually direct you to the nearest one. A truncated postcode (eg. SW1A 1), a list of councils you are in, a rough longitude/latitude, and a 'friendly name' for where we think you are. When you quit your browser
been_on_tour When you first visit Alpha.gov.uk you will be offered a tour. We use this cookie so we know not to show you the tour more than once. 'true' January 2022
feedback_shown If you arrive at Alpha.gov.uk from a search or through certain links we ask if you found what you were looking for. We use this cookie to record the fact we've asked so that we don't pester you again. 'true' January 2022

Forget my location

Why?

When you set your location we can give you details of services local to you, such as Passport offices, driving test centres or police stations, so you can complete any tasks and be away from your computer as quickly as possible.

Your approximate location is stored in a cookie on your machine, but we do not save your postcode or precise location on our servers.
