About the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement

The NHS Institute transforms good ideas into workable solutions for an improving NHS.

In five years we have developed proven and effective products in critical clinical areas which could save the NHS £6bn.

At the NHS Institute: we are facilitators of change for improvement, working alongside the frontline of the NHS

Our work in 2011-12

Recognising the pace of change across the NHS during the next year we have started conversations with NHS organisations across England to discuss how we can work together to help with the tough challenges in respect of QIPP agenda and major efficiency challenges.

Last year we worked with over 80% of NHS trusts to deliver products, services, assistance with implementation and training to help organisations increase productivity and efficiency and improve care.

For this year we’ve strengthened our offer with:

  • Further developments to the Productive Series
  • More focus on safer care and delivering quality and value
  • A suite of commissioning modules developed to meet the needs of GP-led consortia
  • Major work to support aspirant FTs to increase productivity and efficiency
  • New system development to support local authorities, consortia and providers develop the new partnership arrangements. 

Our objectives for 2011/12

Our focus will be on continuing to provide the NHS with a high level of support and activities to help healthcare organisations deliver on QIPP and efficiency challenges.

We will also be working to change the organisational form of the NHS Institute following the Arm’s Length Body Review in July of last year.

A new NHS Institute for a new NHS landscape

The review of Arm’s-length bodies (part of the Liberating the NHS) concluded that some functions of the NHS Institute would transfer to the NHS Commissioning Board and that we should explore commercial delivery models for its future. In response a Change Board was established with senior NHS leaders and a business case, that assesses new status options, was submitted to the Department of Health in March 2011.

The recently announced pause in the passage of the Health and Social Care Bill may impact the exact model for the future of the NHS Institute, but we are not letting this hold us up. We are making good progress in contracting directly with NHS organisations for a one to three year period with the incentive that longer partnerships are able to attract significant discounts in cost to trusts and consortia.
