How to apply from Afghanistan

The British Embassy in Kabul only offers a limited passport service.  Applications and fees are collected in Kabul and the application is forwarded to Islamabad for processing.  Please contact the British Embassy on +93 (0) 700 102 000 for further information on applying for a first child passport

Changes to your application from 18 August

Please note the following changes that will affect your passport application. With effect from 18 August 2011, the British High Commission in Islamabad will process your passport. The passport will be printed in the United Kingdom.

These changes will ensure that you receive the new style passports which were introduced in the UK in October 2010.  The new passports have more sophisticated security features, required to meet international quality and security standards. It is not affordable to print these new passports overseas.  New designs and processes reduce the likelihood of identity theft and passport fraud, protecting British nationals and our borders.

Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for further details on these important changes.

We recommend that you print this page, so you can refer to it. Print

If it is a first time application (this includes children who have not had a British passport before, customers who are changing their name other than by marriage or replacing old blue books) you should allow at least 12 weeks for processing. If you are replacing a lost or stolen passport, you should allow at least six weeks.

We would remind customers that travel should not be booked until a passport has been issued and received by you. We cannot accept responsibility for any costs incurred if  travel is booked and subsequently cancelled before you have received your passport.

Delivery back to you

Your passport will be returned to the British Embassy in Kabul.  You will receive a telephone call from the Embassy when your passport is ready for collection.

Specific requirements from Afghanistan

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION: In order to combat attempted passport fraud in Afghanistan we require some additional documentation.  We also make additional checks.  The documentation required depends on the type of application being made.  You need to ensure that your application includes the necessary documents - otherwise it will not be accepted.  The following checklists outline the documentation required by application type:

PASSPORT FRAUD:  There is currently a high level of attempted passport fraud across South Asia.  To tackle this, our specialist fraud prevention teams carry out additional checks and verifications on passport applications.

This means that once we have looked at your application we may:

  • Ask for a range of additional documents to support your claim and your identity.
  • Call you for interview at our office in Islamabad.

We apologise for any inconvenience, but these measures are necessary to prevent fraud and a range of other offences.

Please be aware that in any cases where we suspect passport fraud, we will:

  • Retain the application fee and suspect documents.
  • Consider prosecution of the applicant, including passing documentation given in the application to the local authorities.

NATIONALITY ENQUIRIES: Please note that we are unable to provide advice on enquiries related to nationality.  Please see the section on Am I eligible for a UK passport for further information.

Translations:

All legal documents in a foreign language, submitted with a passport application (such as birth/death/marriage certificates, divorce papers, change of name documents, affidavits, etc) should be translated into English by a professional translator.  The translation must be on their company letterhead or have their official stamp/seal/signature, and must give their contact details.  NB You cannot get a friend or relative to do this for you.
