Eastern ranges will have the best of any sunshine, although mostly fine across the highlands at first. Cloud thickening from the west with light rain turning persistent in west by dusk.

Gales: Winds freshening through the day with gales across summits later [High risk]

Persistent extensive hill fog: Hill fog developing on western hills later. [Low risk]

Weather

A dry bright start with a good deal of sunny weather. Chilly with sub-zero temperatures first thing and some ice on paths. Cloud developing at times but well above summits. More in the way of lower cloud developing over west Perthshire, Badenoch and also Trossachs in the afternoon. Some rain developing here, preceded by light snow on highest summits. Cloud and rain spreading to eastern ranges by dusk.

Visibility

Excellent visibility with all the distant hills visible. Visibility will deteriorate to moderate in rain in the afternoon, particularly in the west.

Hill fog

None expected in the morning but gathering above 800 metres in the west early afternoon then lowering to 500 metres in rain.

Maximum wind speeds above 600m

West 25 gust 35mph becoming SW 35 gusts 50mph later

Temperatures

Glens - Minus 2 Celsius at first but lifting to 7 Celsius.
900 m - Plus 2 Celsius, rising to plus 5 Celsius later
Freezing level - 1000 metres rising to above summits later.
