BUPA Great North Run

18 September - Check the local weather forecast if you are taking part in this year's BUPA Great North Run.

Events calendar sponsored by AVIS

The BUPA Great North Run takes place in the north east and sees runners competing in a half marathon between Newcastle Upon Tyne and South Shields.

Thousands run to raise money for charity but the race also attracts some of the world's top long distance athletes.

Last year's elite winners were Haile Gerbrselassie in the men's race and Berharne Adere in the women's race. Both athletes are from Ethiopia.

Running and the weather

The Great North Run has seen varying conditions in the past 30 years. From extremely wet days to days that were extremely warm for mid September which made the run very difficult for the charity runners.

The participants will be looking for a cool and cloudy day, with a light breeze to make for the best running conditions.

For further information about the event, visit the  Bupa Great North Run website.
